Eat Meat? God? Truth?

I read this blog that I found by hitting "next blog" a few times and it interested me. So I posted a comment to what she had to say, which I included below.

"I won't eat meat,
because I'm not better than any other animal
And I won't respect that you do, pet,
because you don't see the world in my colours
Don't claim that you're against torture when you're
eating
raw pain, blood, suffering

You know you're not more special than others,
merely because you are born
with perfect, thin limbs

Go ahead;
do whatever you want
Just don't demand for me to respect it,
'Cause I don't want to be
near
the way you are"

I don't know if you believe in God and that the Bible is inspired by God, but I do! I believe that it is THE TRUTH.

In the book of Acts in the Bible in chapter 10 it says:
"About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."
"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."
The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean..."

I believe that we can eat meat, but I believe we should not kill just for sake of killing. I believe that we should not consider ourselves better than eachother, but I do believe we are created different from the rest of creation - we are created in God's Image! That is THE TRUTH!

If you don't believe in basing TRUTH by what the Bible says I want to ask you a question just from the logical point of view.
A question for you if I may ask, what do you consider the difference between killing an animal and a plant, they both are living things? How did you decide to make the line between plants and animals the line between what is alright to eat and what isn't right to eat? Do you believe we are better than plants?

I believe we all have to draw a line somewhere on what is right and wrong. I don't believe we all can be right either, and I think you would agree with that based on your blog. So doesn't it make sense that we would base what we believe is right and wrong in this world on what the creator and sustainer of the world says. And if you don't believe in a God then how can there be some things that are right and some things that are wrong.

There is so much more I could say but if you want to discuss life more I would love to talk.

Oh, I've got a lot to say on the topic of meat. I agree: eating meat is not a bad thing that God condemns. BUT...it must be done in moderation. In short, North America eats much more meat than they should. Here are a few of my thoughts:
Meat consumption has gone up 500% since the 1950s in North America. Therefore, there are much more cows, etc. than there used to be (actually, 1.3 billion). The problem with having all these cows include (1) ENVIRONMENTAL: they and other livestock account for 10% of the world's green-house gas emissions (ie. oil to power machines, make fertilizer, tranport feed/animals, etc. 10-30% more than, let's say, corn or soy. And also, their farts are genuinely potent--80 million tonnes of methane, a particularly bad green house gas...)
(2)PEOPLE: It takes 10 kilograms of feed and 100 000 of water to produce 1 kg of beef. NOt only are cows taking up more space, but so is the food needed to feed the cows. All of this land, food, and water can be better used to secure food for the poor, who are quite literally have their food go to the pigs.
As caretakers of God's creation, we have a responsibility to make sure that the earth and its inhabitants are being served. I'm not sure that the unhealthy amount of meat that North Americans consume is being a good steward of God's creation. I'm not necessarily advocating vegetarianism, BUT I am advocating MODERATE meat consumption, because it's consequences are detrimental to creation and the people who live in it.

Thanks Ann, I was hoping for some good responses to this. I know there are a lot of issues that go into "simple" ideas.

I have got little to say on this topic, but i figured why not. Scince i have chosen not to eat meat i feel as though i have to clarify by saying that i did not choose to not eat meat because i feel that God condones it, in fact it says no where in the bible that peopel should not eat meat or that they should. So for me, soley a personal preferance. that is my two sense, but i feel like the passage you quoted was a bit out of context as i have read the passage, so maybe i am wrong, but as i recall God is not telling peter "eat meat" but rather telling him that because of the redemption of christ they no longer have to follow the clean and unclean laws of the jewish laws. As far as i know until this vision certain animals were ok to eat, but not certian hoofed animals, so i don't think that this passage really applies to what you want to say, but i am unsure. Maybe i miss read what you wrote. I wonder if there are other passages adressing this issue. have a good one!

I absolutely agree with you that this passage does not say that we HAVE TO eat meat. But it does give an example that WE CAN eat meat. That is my point and I totally respect those that choose not to eat meat because of preference and because of health concerns. Or those great points that Ann gave to be concervative with our meat intake.
