One of the pastors in town today called me a rebel after a couple hours of talking. I think it was kind of a positive and kind of a negative thing in his mind. Well I took it as a compliment after thnking about it. He called me a rebel for the most part because I dont just believe things because that is what my church says.
He is right... I want the Truth whereever that comes from: whatever denomination that comes from; whatever writter, singer, or speaker that comes from - "secular" or Christian... Because if it is Truth it is Truth for everyone.
I believe that I need to keep on questioning what I believe. Am I sure I believe that? Why do I believe that? Are you sure that is what God says? What about this? OK so that is the Truth, but doesn't that also change this? Why? Why? Why? (Little kids have the best questions even though they don't know it some times) Maybe I am being a little purseuded by what I am reading and discussing lately. Velvet Elvis: Rob Bell... Read It... Discuss It Good Night

hey mike,
the whole all truth is God's truth idea scares me a little. don't get me wrong, i find a lot of truth in fiction be it on film or printed page. what scares me though is truth is about context. it's about the right person saying the right thing. i think that we, as semi/learning longer than some christians can read/watch fiction or what have you and see that there is truth in there, but if it's coming form a context that is all against what i believe is it still truth?
a poignant example would fit well here. i'll try and think of one. okay, how about an art example, salvador dali, in his painting of christ on the cross. from the exterior it looks like truth, it's a depiction of the one act that saves me. but if you learn more abou dali and what he believes you begin to understand that this painting has nothing to do with christ at all, but rather is about sexual things that dali was working out. that being revealed does it still remain true? i'm not sure. i tend to think that you can learn from anything. whether it be kill bill or a walk to remember. but that's learning, i'm not sure if it's truth. context does play a role, i'm just not sure what that role is.
my thoughts:influenced by aesthetics with john kok.
I would also agree with you Jack that context is also important and sometimes the Truth that we read or see in art or maybe poetry is Truth because we read it from our context but in the authors context they don't see it in the way you do. Take a look at Acts 17:28 and its context (verses 16-34). Paul takes a poet from Athens quote about their gods and makes it Truth by using it in his context of the God. pretty crazy huh?
am i first on your conter mike?
